Newly Inspired at the Cemetery

I spent a couple hours this afternoon harassing a seagull nesting in a urn at the cemetery. She has a couple of very sweet, speckled chicks hidden away in the urn. As I was leaving the scene I got a sudden glimpse of the seagull through a crack in the elder bush and this is the result. I am quite pleased.

Here Jens you have the original.

and then the crop off center. Can't get this blog site to put the photos where I want them embedded in the text. Argh

Great shot! I really like the way the seagull pop outs of the image and the nice grayscale of the pattern that surrounds the bird. A photographic moment.

Someway I am curious how the picture would look like if the seagull had not been totally centered as it is now. Would it even become a better image when the most of the surroundings are totally dark? I am not sure at all, just curious to see if it would improve the picture or not. The feeling I have is that it would not improve the picture just because the surroundings are totally dark. This is one opportunity that really proves that all the rules for composition are nothing but guidelines and recommendations.

This image would be great on a square poster.

Thanks. I tried cropping it in different configurations and in the end the middle seemed to work the best. I think that the light above the bird gives the eye and escape helps. I can't wait to see it in print. I actually tried lightening the lens flare to the left of the bird and decided it was a distraction. So I left that in it's original form. I will have a look and see. Can post them to give you and idea.
